Mort - Terry Pratchett With apologies to Eddie Izzard, when it comes to Discworld novels, I'd have to choose DEATH over Cake. In the throes of a mid-death crisis, the all caps guy takes on an apprentice (Mort) so he can go see what the living thing is all about, also fly-fishing, gambling, cooking, etc. Wackiness does ensue, but there's a sense of wistfulness and melancholy in this one that makes it my new fave, next to Hogfather.
