Birdsong
The WWI story that makes up the heart of the novel is exceptional--gripping, direct and powerful. But SF can't quite make his female characters come alive in a meaningful way, despite the importance of Isabelle in Stephen's life and how he'll handle the war. A shame, really, because I wanted to be swept away by this book.
